A lovely record this, with focus and charm a-plenty. I’ve heard other stuff from Windsor for the Derby but never been as struck by their output as I am by this one. The balmy pop of opener Let Go owes a lot to the marriage of the New Order-style drum fill (is the track Mesh? I think so) and the floating synth. This is the kind comment that I could apply to lots of sounds and dynamics on How We Lost, as their songs often remind me of other things; but somehow the band pulls it off each time. Maladies and Falling off the Earth are rousing guitar anthems even if they do remind me of the Psychedelic Furs or Yo La Tengo now and again.

There are like moments of ambience which give an otherworldly feel to this LP. And remind me of the other stuff of theirs I’ve heard. But none of it is lacklustre. Quite the reverse. At times it’s a shit sight better than the stuff media darlings Atlas Sound produce. And the change of tack (What We Want, Good Things) into investigating what made bands from the “Scene that Celebrates Itself” tick is something to listen to, even if it is a tad baffling.

Enjoyable, eclectic and worth checking out.
