Done well, there’s nothing finer than an out and out rock album. Done badly and contemplating major dental work begins to seem preferable to listening to the whole thing a second time. Sadly, Dusk, from Ladyfinger(ne) falls in to the latter category despite the band’s best efforts. With its mish mash of Rush-influenced guitar riffs, college rock boy vocals and lumpen drumming, the tracks all too rapidly blur into one and though this gives the album a readily indentifiable and cohesive sound, it also means that after a while it becomes a bit like eating a plate of vegetarian chilli; no subtle changes in texture, few lyrical surprises and very little to drag you out of the stupor induced by the album’s relentless one-dimensional aural onslaught. End of term report says, "Must try harder next time."
