A tremendous record, with enough to win you over despite its sedate pace. It reminds me a lot of the Scottish Enlightenment and their patient, unruffled approach to making music. Or maybe Lambchop, but to be honest there’s not really much point throwing up references in that Luik’s world is very much their own. You can get caught up in this LP, suspend the odd hour in time just listening to it – the opener All of My World is particularly luxurious, revelling in its own sense of time and space. It also has a killer refrain that’s carried by a very unobtrusive organ part.
This band creates space marvellously, and they understand the dynamics of setting out a song in a way that isn’t very Dutch… By that I mean they see the beauty of playing meandering slightly disordered music, showing off their muse from the hip rather than organising from the head. The tracks don’t last for too long, which in turn allows an inherent pop sensibility to shine through, such on We’re Both Extermined, A Fool and the title track. And simple, appealing, major chord structures or guitar licks too (as in A Fool); and that is a blessed relief… Frankly if you’re going to play at 3 miles an hour for the duration you might as well use any pop trick in the book rather than try to be too clever.
