A beautiful if quietly off the wall record, Free Time sounds like the band has been drinking heavily, (probably in their free time) such is the woozy vibe that infuses the whole of the LP. It’s one of the more interesting best off kilter pop records of this year, though it feels as if Pinkunoizu have rolled up, knocked out this LP and then gone off and done something else.
Still, worries about paying your dues to the dignity of artistic labour (or lack of it) aside, I find this an incredibly infectious record; the accent is on having fun and doing things for the hell of it. The combination of slide guitar balanced against some kind of rhumba on Cyborg Manifesto is just spaced out, as is the beat on Parabolic Delusions: a rhythm not far removed from the sort of shuffle Paul Simon is famous for using, fights it out with the wobbly synth and brass stabs. (This track has the daft but naggingly insistent line, “Like an endless loop of American troops / I will come for you” too… wonderful). There’s more fun to be had elsewhere, The Abyss is a marvellously groovy and sexy mantra with a full on guitar tail out, seventies style. It’s beautiful, as is the kooky Death is Not a Lover, which slowly changes its skin every minute or so whilst managing to keep the groove. And Everything is Broken or Stolen is a Barrett-esque dream, crystalline, whispered and fuzzy with psychedelics.
