Tenuzu No Chiizu – Girls Like Us
Just to let you know before I start this review, I’m not going to reference any of the songs on this LP. There is a very good reason for this, namely they are all called TNC – albeit with a coda of 01 or 42 after them. I expect TNC stands for Tenuzu No Chiizu. Still, it matters not a jot, in that all 13 tracks are mood pieces utilizing piano, guitar and drums and very little else.
Stylistically it is a record that is very reminiscent of Popol Vuh’s Hosiana Mantra, but rather less devotional and more sardonic in its tone. The guitar threatens to break away from the piano at times, at other moments it is in thrall to the piano’s slumberous bidding. At the moments where the piano holds sway, the LP strays into Harold Budd territory. Other tracks have ore of a folky, Robert Wyatt bent to them, which, I suppose gives an idea of the intelligence behind this work.
A release definitely worth seeking out.
