This album seems to be about prostitutes; particularly those found applying for trade in Amsterdam‘s beautiful Vondelpark. The cover – I think – shows a graphic and stylized picture of two ladies of the night. No matter, as the music on this CD is simply fantastic. It is full on experimental stuff. Een Ode aan Ed van der Elsken is best described as a sampled, intensely tribal meditation before the full madness of Regenbogen Stelen van Prostitutes takes hold. There’s a "have a cup of tea" Gong riff in there amongst the veritable chimps’ tea party of instruments (you even get the kitchen sink here, I can tell you).
Of course, as with a lot of music of this nature, the music dips and sways, quietens and gets lost in individual, tortuous frenzied soloing. Still, I’m handing it to these boys, they don’t back off at all. I bet it is sensational live. Jacob van Lennepkade is up next, starting with a shockingly sensible sax riff. Luckily things become much funkier as a squalling guitar ushers in some form of cop theme work out. It reminds me of the Crusaders records I own (albeit a much more angst-ridden Crusaders). It’s ace stuff, and rather demented – certainly over the top. Vondelpark bij Nacht is a sitar-laden sulky mooch through Amsterdam‘s most beautiful open public space. Quite why it reminds me of Mitternacht by Kraftwerk is anybody’s guess.

All in all this album is most definitely not for the faint hearted, but its great fun and obviously a shining light in the rather predictable sludgy world of Dutch modern popular music. More of this please!
