an intruiging little EP
The Hot Puppies are making quite a name for themselves in the UK at present. They’re even supporting the mighty British Sea Power so they’ve done enough to grab our attention, but this is a little side project/cast off project for the two ladies at the heart of that band and what we have here looks like a bit of a weird one on paper. The idea of somebody covering Cilla Black’s Anyone Who Had A Heart is a bit bewildering at first, until you remember that it was written by Burt Bacharach and is actually a bloody lovely little song. It’s handled beautifully here too, and without the teeth, so you may well fall in love with it again. Their version of The Smiths’ Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me isn’t bad either, although not quite as wonderful. The third cover is a take on Ella Fitzgerald’s I’m Making Believe and is probably too slight to keep your attention, even if it lasts less than two and a half minutes, but the one original song here, French Song, is a lovely little thing. Sung in French it’s incredibly wistful and will make you think of lost loves, cold winter days, cups of cocoa and other such wonderful things.
All in all it’s an intruiging little EP. A curate’s egg, possibly, but the Cilla Black cover is well worth checking out, if nothing else and it would be nice to see this side project given a bit more time to blossom.
