You can’t argue with 20 minute takes on Pink Lady Lemonade now can you? Well I can’t but then I love Acid Mothers Temple. This LP sees them with new drummer and vocalist Pikachu (who does the zany cartoon sleeve artwork). Less mind-bending than other LPs of theirs, this release concentrates on laying down a You-era Gong-like groove and allowing the listener to find their own private meditational space within the relentlessly repeating riffs and crystalline guitar runs. There are bits on Pink Lady Lemonade where the subtlety of the ever-developing instrumentation is overwhelming. It takes some real skill to set up an organic 20 minute work out that sounds at once charming, beautiful and genuinely exciting.
Of course the other three tracks are long and equally as brilliant, especially Message from Outer Space, which sounds just like the song title…
One for space cadets everywhere.
