Ah, Swedish girly-pop, with guitars, what’s more… New Beginnings is a stonker of a track; a strutting new wave guitar line and an edgy beat collides with a screaming main vocal that can only offer you everything. The chorus is great too, very glam (as are the sax parts). The whole thing is up-tempo, using that sort of Franz Ferdinand stomp that I suppose isn’t trendy anymore. But who cares about trends? If you can’t at least tap your foot along to stuff like Give it Back, Big Bangs, Black Holes, Meteorites or Movie Romance you must be a very glum person indeed.
There are great pay-offs amongst those Franz-y guitars; squealing, wailing harridan vocals at every turn, the kind of sax not heard since Roxy’s first LP, and pounding choruses not a hundred miles away from Pulp in their pomp. Loads of songs start off with a drum-roll (Wishing Well, Rumours, etc etc) which is something that endears me to them immeasurably. Last Choice is a great pop song, a mix of sub-New Order beat and a demented Leader of the Pack pay-off that’s totally out of step with what’s gone before. Oh, and some of the dumbest cop-off vocals since Jerry Lee. Brilliant. And check the song out about hoying up on a boat. It’s called Seasick.
Fabulous, glittery, spangle-pop, and very much a tonic for these times.
