An enjoyable blast, with some great guitar surges. And one or two cracking songs. You can also forgive the fact that thirteen tracks of splurging guitars can mean everything melts into one growling, metallic whole. In short, if you like guitars, and remember buying Daydream Nation or Copper Blue when they came out, you’ll find it’s a pretty enjoyable listen.
Half Red Half Way sets the tone for pretty much everything else on the album, with its snarling riffs, luxuriant, densely textured effects and pattering drumming. The vocals are laconic, and as the lad can’t really compete with the racket create around him, he just allows the whole thing to wash over. The second track Poly Daughters is one of the best, mainly because there’s a fair mix of light and shade, and a clear sonic map. It’s also got a gloriously rich guitar tail-out which raises matters another notch. When they indulge in these richly textured assaults, (see also Now Boy), they put me in mind of Lansing Dreiden at their noisiest and also Holland’s Kattedreuffe. Preachy is another cracker, and when they set up a track to be tense and expectant, their Muse really blossoms.
There’s a side of them that also delights in woozy messy squalls of noise (4H Trip and Host are real slacker pieces), and the slower tracks such as Intro to Fractions rely a lot on slabs of white noise breaking up the druggy vocal laments. It’s all okay if nothing remarkable.
All in all, a pretty enjoyable splurge of white noise.
