This is a great single by September Girls. I liked their last a lot too, but Green Eyed is a real kick up from what went before, more confident, cleaner, and happy to push the melody lines for all they’re worth. Green Eyed is a tough and sassy track; also that touch devotional (must be that wistful refrain which really gives the song its charm). The whole thing is richly embroidered. Some delicately expressed guitar lines peal and chime over the top of a sludgy, fuzzy bass and the vocals add tone: actually for such a soft vocal, its remarkable how noticeable and affecting it is. B side Danny Wood is another thing, driven by a spindly organ sound and some choppy bass, it’s more perky, cheeky and much more straightforward: a straight, out of the box no instructions required take on ‘60s girl pop. Who is this Danny Wood anyway? I’m hoping some knacker from Dundalk or something. So there you have it. Soft Power put out some pretty good things in their own unhurried way. This is one of their best.
