Dan Bridgwood-Hill seems to have played on almost every album coming out of Manchester in the past few years but dbh (his small caps, not mine) sees him making music ‘for himself.’ Which means he’s basically holed himself up in a  room and recorded a bunch of instrumentals. The infamous saying is that time flies when you’re having fun. Here, that’s not the case. You’ll still have fun, don’t you worry, and quite a lot of it but dbh’s melodies seem to elongate time as opposed to making it pass unnoticed. Time Flies is a delightful little record – and I’ll bet it sounds beautifully rich, warm and inviting on vinyl – alas, the review copy is only a standard cd. It’s a beautiful collection of meandering and blissful compositions. Time Flies will relax you and, although Bridgwood-Hill is probably more used to wandering through Manchester’s rain soaked streets and drinking in the North Quarter, these songs suggest open spaces, like Yorkshire’s nearby moorland or the Lake District’s mountainous walls and rocky streams and are the kind of tunes you want to listen to when settled in by a roaring log fire after a good day’s hiking. Turn your ears in the direction of this charming little record and there’s half a chance you may just float away into some kind of daydream.  The titles of these compositions hint only slightly at the moods contained within but as to what they’re really all about? That is, thankfully,  for the listener to decide.

Highly recommended.
