Black Engine – Ku Klux Klowns

Imagine rubbing an open sore with sandpaper, and then doing it over and over again- well that’s the sound of Italian ensemble, Black Engine. Ten tracks, ten titles when one would have done, Ku Klux Klowns, their debut album, is what happens when you allow the idea of Art to get in the way of art, when you think technical expertise is a substitute for soul, and believe that the mere act of creation has as much value as creativity itself. The fact that something can be done, doesn’t mean that it should be, and this tedious blend of experimental jazz and hardcore industrial metal is a case in point. This is the sound of Eno era Roxy turned up to 11, fused with the relentless drone of a sweaty workman and his jackhammer. The band describe their music as “sonic catharsis” and with all the charm and wit of a pre-anaesthesia amputation, this album might indeed bring tears to your eyes most likely those of joy as it finally comes to an end.
