Pitchkettle –Know One New

A very enjoyable listen indeed.

A very enjoyable listen indeed.

This CD came all the way from the States in a box the size of a small suspect device. No bomb included, mind; just a CD with a set of ten instrumentals, all pretty interesting and at times inspiring. The music ploughs the usual furrows associated with the abstract post-rock genre, Walt and Pete Dayz and Eraser replicate the templates Codes in The Clouds, 65 Days of Static and Explosions in the Sky have patented. It’s all pleasant enough, especially when the guitar takes off on Pete Dayz

The record really hits its stride from Kid Gloves where the guitars get more squally and intense (at times the wall of noise goes into Chameleons territory) Some moments are really splendid: Arms in the Way of Sleep is a big Baroque guitar work-out that owes something to Robin Guthire, and Surgery 75 could be a rocky take on Moon & the Melodies by Harold Budd & the Cocteau Twins, it shares the same sense of epic luxuriant dreaminess.  There are bits that remind me of Glide’s solo LPs too, (check out the gentle breeze of Less Pillows More Xanax and the jagged, fuzzy pop of On the 4th).

The best is saved till last, the plodding fuzzy vibe of Burr sets up the aforementioned Cocteau-isms of Surgery 75 very well indeed and the all too short growl of Cut Across Shore rounds things up.

A very enjoyable listen indeed.
