One of the more interesting releases this month, without a doubt. Only six tracks but don’t let that put you off. Oh, and if you really want to know, the genre is traditional alt-folk. This LP really should have a sticker saying "banjos and singing saws were used in the making of this recording"… The songs themselves display a warmth and readiness to engage emotionally with the listener, and this short LP is a veritable testament to recording the ups and downs of normal life in an open, honest manner.
Feast of a Thousand Beasts is a stately affair; the combination of banjo, analogue synth and question and answer vocals work surprisingly well. You’ve Already Gone is a great duet about lost love, despite the sluggish beat and Black Iowa Dirt is more cheery (if ironic) number documenting the qualities of Iowa soil.
Folllowing that, We Miss You is an affecting song chronicling the loss of a father. Despite the sad nature of the lyrics, it is wonderfully upbeat; a remarkably sprightly number, a celebration rather than a lament. The synth drum beat propels the song in a surprisingly emphatic manner. Marrow is a frolicksome piece, a question and answer morality tale set over some sprightly banjo playing. The marrow referred to is bone marrow, not the vegetable by the way. Hallways of Always rounds this short album off, a moody instrumental closer to Brian Eno in style.
