What a cracking release this is! Quirky and charming, beautifully paced, possessing beautiful melodies by the hatful, this LP really deserves your attention. Opener Canmatady is a strange, dreamy thing that is never sure of its function; concocted from some winsome slacker vocals and a circular melody that owes something to Super Furry Animals it sticks around hoping we’ll notice. Far more assertive is Out Country Way, which is a psychedelic camp-fire song relying on the friction between some druggy guitar drones and a prim synthesizer part. Things break down half way through only to come back with a vengeance by the end.
The songs are for the most part dreamy affairs with hooks and melodies you can hum along to. There are plenty of ironic noises and the instrumentation is always “interesting”; Beck is never far away stylistically. Or for that matter, Money Mark. As I mentioned earlier, there’s a considerable slacker charm; sometimes things are so somnolent (Island in the Sun) you could almost be lulled into nodding off. And then there are moments of pure charm; where everything clicks and the listener settles back to unfettered enjoyment (Basketball Song and All Night Every Day).
