The Hunches – Exit Dreams

…this record boasts a High Art Rock vibe with a capital A, despite the slacker posturing. Whisper it, but it’s like White Heat/White Light at moments. Hot stuff indeed.

Boy, do I like scruffy guitar squalls like this LP. In my eyes, this Hunches record can do no wrong, right from the opener Actors, they scream and thrash around like discontented two year olds in the bath. Exit Dreams has a feel of Royal Trux to it, with tracks like Not Invited or the magnificent Carnival Debris reminding this listener of that primal Trux art attack. In fact, with tracks like Street Sweeper, this record boasts a High Art Rock vibe with a capital A, despite the slacker posturing. Whisper it, but it’s like White Heat/White Light at moments. Hot stuff indeed.

It’s also an intense record, as the tremendous din on Ate My Teeth or Your Sick Blooms will testify to. Imagine that Swell Maps had finally got their act together and learned to play… Certainly the Hunches have that same trebley guitar sound and mental, piss-around quality (listen to From This Window and Fall Drive for further proof).

Top disk, if you’re in a mood to celebrate white noise & riffs.
