A quick note; men, take note please, wearing stuff like three quarter length camo pants, sporty tops and baseball caps makes you all look like huge school kids. Stop it.

Ah, bliss! Another night at the cradle of civilisation and groovy good manners that is Sub071. The evening’s entertainment was to comprise of two bands infiltrated by Brits; headlining were girl group the Kellies who hail from Argentina and Hampshire, and supporting were My Vanity Project who were advertised as a Dutch band, but boasted members hailing from Luton and its environs…

Enough of crossing boundaries. My Vanity Project started proceedings off with an instrumental and promptly proceeded to wreck the drum kit, causing the sort of uncomfortable delay one only experiences in a room with 30 people and a band. Nevertheless, once sound, heat and drum issues were solved, the ‘Project knocked out an increasingly impressive and robust set which reminded this old git of the Soft Boys at times. At one point, during a track called Circus of Pigs, the singer wore a pig mask, and somehow didn’t look ludicrous at all; (not that he looked impressive, or someone to be imitated out there on the streets, but you know what I mean). Truly a band to be reckoned with and they’ve got character and wit in spades.

Following a brief interval where Incendiary took full advantage of the excellent beer prices, The Kellies bounced on stage and proceeded to have an inter-band conference oblivious to all. Which, it seems (from watching other Latin American groups) is very much the ‘thing’. Once sorted, the band knocked out a set of Johnny Richman-inspired punk pop which, however clichéd, always sounds fresh and fun when you’re actually there in the room. You also get the feeling through their sense of total commitment to their cause that this lot are a gang in the best sense of the word.

Indeed, the positive vibrations the Kellies gave off was mirrored in the raucous support showed by a section of gentlemen wearing the now obligatory summer uniform of three quarter length camo pants, sporty tops and baseball caps enjoyed the Kellies very much. Maybe it was the home-made Colgate toothpaste t-shirt the singer and bassist wore…

A quick note; men, take note please, wearing stuff like three quarter length camo pants, sporty tops and baseball caps makes you all look like huge school kids. Stop it. A further note. What is it with bands swapping instruments these days?

Anyway, gripes aside, a fine gig, and check both these out, as you’ll be in for good times.
