A synth-led duo from Perth Australia living and recording in Leiden, Holland. Beat that. Their EP is a fabulous slice of soulful, intelligent synth pop that often veers on the abstract. At the same time it’s enormously self-possessed; very much in the manner of staring out of the window, this record could be seen as thoughts made sound.
Just before you think, oh, not another clever record made by clever people, I must report that, in terms of mood and attack, it’s very sultry stuff indeed. There’s more than a hint of the diva on these recordings; breathy vocals that tend, (a little bit too much it has to be said), to tail off into a whisper: plus sensual lyrics such as “skin of a peach”, “strangers kissing on a train”, you get the picture.
The EP boasts a judicious choice of sounds and tones, very satisfying in that this is minimal music, allowed to plough its own quiet furrow. Vocals are sometimes used as a sort of collage and the tracks are choc-full cut ups of wibbles, beats and hooks. I have to say, though, that the whole EP cleverly avoids sounding whacky or odd, such a trial with this sort of music.
