A straight forward rock record, but a bloody good one. It’s one of those records that you want to play rather than write or talk about and I usually find that no amount of extemporising helps explain why simple rock and roll can have such a beneficial effect on the soul. So take note: this record does absolutely nothing extraordinary, outside (of course) of making you pretty effing happy.
Everything starts at a charge: Turn It Round and Animal are fabulous, Stooges/Faces/Saints metal squalls, replete with that trademark “classic guitar band” sound – lots of thrashy chords, tremolo, and squiggly solos, frantic drumming, pounding, bass… you know the stuff by now I’d hope. And this tremendous good time vibe enervates and courses through all up-tempo tracks on this record –like a glowing slippery conger eel it charges through Please Don’t Go Away, Cube, or Open Your Heart: you can almost reach out and touch it but you can’t hold it down. The quieter moments are infused with a similarly warm vibe, Country Song is a great instrumental that just doesn’t want to call time on its riffing, whereas Presence is a groovy, friendly drone and Candy is a country rocker with a nod or two to Big Star or CVB. It’s goofy stuff, unassuming but never looking to play at being the gobby hick. Very enjoyable indeed.
