A hard and flinty EP this, hard in the sense that it’s full of a sense of mission, despite it flitting between a mix of spaced out rock noodling such as in Apocryphal and Wrong Affection, or some dolorous folky observations that sound they’ve been recorded in your kitchen, (see Are You Expired?), or, far more worryingly, creepy monologues like Coward. Some bloke singing about watching you when you get out of the shower, or the shack being on fire isn’t the most comforting of listens, especially when set over a never- ending and pretty basic guitar pattern…
I Know When It’s Time To Get The Fuck Away is a funny little record, it doesn’t stick around for long, it’s a 5 track EP after all… The songs are quiet and what melodies there are, are subjugated in favour of a LOT of scraping and sliding. Or stop-start laments… It’s a record of abstract, abstruse moods, and certainly not always sunny. Look at the titles, it should give you a hint of what’s going on: Are You Expired?, Coward, Bodies, Wrong Affection. You almost expect a hidden extra track called Body Bag, or something. So this record is not that easy as music when considered track for track, but listening as a kind of backdrop does work; there’s a hypnotic element about the whole thing; (it must be down to the fact it’s pretty much a collection of semi acoustic drones). The harmonica on the last track, Wrong Affection, comes as quite a relief and sets up the most harmonious and content of all the songs here: though again it’s a sound that is uneasy, unstable and always threatening to go down some dark path.
