Your idea of Utopia is probably different from mine but I’m pretty sure your idea doesn’t contain a ska-europop crossover house band playing in the bar every night. No, I didn’t think it would. Anyway, for Markscheider Kunst it does and if the idea of mixing ska and europop together hasn’t got you running away from your computer monitor quicker than when someone catches you hunched over the keyboard with your pants round your ankles then I suggest you check this out. I can guarantee that it’s better than you think it is going to be.

Yes it’s daft – of course it is! – but seems as this comes to us courtesy of the mighty fine Eastblok label, there’s no way in hell this is some kind of parody. The ska sound is there, although its wrapped in a cloak and disguised rather heavily. The tempo is right but the horns are so over the top and shiny they sound like they’ve escaped from one of those crappy mariachi bands you find in dodgy Mexican restaurants. Lyrically, as its not sung in English, I haven’t the foggiest as to what its about but I would hazard a guess at topics like women and whisky and having a bit of a knees up down the local. It’s got that kind of vibe to it. At times you’re never quite sure if what you’re hearing is something you should be voluntarily listening to and the whiff of cheese does get stronger the longer you stick with it but when you’re sat there with a smile on your face, giggling to yourself at how ridiculous it all is I suggest you just go with the flow. I’m still not convinced that gypsy folk, Mariachi horns and ska beats should combine to make anybody’s idea of utopia but you could just pour yourself a cocktail, play this loud and sit back and wait for your loved ones to call for the doctor for you. It’ll be a giggle if nothing else.
