A lovely record and one that is worth repeated plays. Bachelorette’s music is displayed to its best effect if you’re in the mood for a quiet listen: though we warn that you should really pay attention, otherwise her muse is one that catches you unawares. Despite there being layers of samples, treatments and other electronic hugger-muggery – Tui Tui boasts lots of wibbly noises and whistling as its sonic mainstays – the songs have something of the bedroom about them: or pop that has been placed in a vacuum. The Light Seekers, for example, could well pass as a very stoned Abba track. I also get the feeling she’s a bit of a Beach Boys fan.
The girl’s voice is never one to pin you to the wall: she relies on an almost over-powering softness, whatever sharpness or irony or wit is in the songs (and there is a fair dollop of all, just listen to Not Entertainment) is wrapped up in the most gently persuasive manner. There’s a soporific air to some of the music; Blanket sounds exactly like it should, and Sugarbug and The Last Boat’s Leaving could pass for classic lullabies. Digital Brain is another track that can put you in a trance, despite it having the most restless beat on the record.
