Mourn – Mourn

Mourn see slackness as something to be eradicated; cut OUT. Even the song called Squirrel (about squirrels I presume) sounds like a band of teenage Visigoths having a booze up.

Sometimes you hear something that has such a striking personality about it you have to stop what you’re doing and work out what”s going on. Mourn won’t win any prizes for exploring the limits of rock and roll’s sound, but there again with this LP why the fuck should they? They may, however, start to shake things up courtesy of their incredibly direct and attitude.

This is a feisty, sharp-elbowed record that cuts back on fills or clever arrangements and tries to keep everything direct. All the tracks are about 2 minutes long, which is great, nothing gets too loose, and the vitriol is served piping hot. And that works really well. Opener, Your Brain is Made of Candy slowly builds up a head of steam (the track’s got something of Patti Smith about it) before stopping suddenly without any warning. Tracks like Dark Issues seem to draw on a squat attitude as well. Something like the UK’s Mr Heart or Kin.

And this debut by Mourn is one that has an anger and bravura in its marrow. Even though there’s this Gen X slacker feel to tracks like Otitis and Marshall, there’s no existential, pre-millennial preening going on. You get the feeling that Mourn see slackness as something to be eradicated; cut OUT. Even the song called Squirrel (about squirrels I presume) sounds like a band of teenage Visigoths having a booze up. The CD has a bonus track called Boys are Cunts. And whoever the Jack in Jack is, has got a shock coming.

Apparently they’re all about 17. Good for them. I wish I could have related my anger and frustration as well as this bunch when I was that age.
