To return to Van Dyck Parks. If you like his two LPs Discover America and the Clang of the Yankee Reaper (both whimsical psychedelic masterpieces that drew heavily on the 1930s and 1940s dance band and show tunes for inspiration) then you’ll love this. Only a guess on my part mind…

I immediately flew into a huge whiskey-fuelled rage (from which Farnsworth still carries a slight limp in his right leg) before embarking on a rampage through the Roger studio destroying 17 Flying Vs, 412 pairs of sunglasses, 9 army jackets, 3 vintage bass guitars, 1 vintage copy of Playboy… nothing was spared – I destroyed or urinated on all of them.

A more eclectic collection of instruments (slide guitar, double base, maybe a washboard and a weird almost underwater synthesizer noise) usher in Birdies Singing. It’s a weird number, but compelling, like a lot of the rest of the album, very reminiscent of late sixties folky/psychedelic tracks like Traffic’s Berkshire Poppies.

The last song, Love Connection is described in the sleeve notes thus; “Love Connection is a cover of a Parenthetical Girls song, which features a sparse, Congolese influenced arrangement that Ashworth (that’s Mr. Casiotone to you, folks) created while acting as a guest member of the band”. This is the one about menstrual fluids by the way. It’s great.

It is very druggy stuff, reminiscent of very early, Chasing a Bee era Mercury Rev, (albeit with that particular band’s rough edges smoothed away).

“Stewart sings of the insipid voice of his lover, wonders if he can hear their glass heart clinking, and then finally cuddles up at their “disgusting feet”. Really, you can only laugh.
The only thing missing is a video showing Wotjek – he was their dancer. Pre-Bez he ‘interpreted’ the songs by flailing his arms and jumping up and down. Or that’s how I remember it.
