I’ll tell you something for nothing. This past month or so has seen the release of some unbelievable albums by people who in another walk of life would be queuing for their free bus passes. Classic albums by Tom Waits, Nick Cave (okay so he’s not that ancient, but you know what I mean), Marianne Faithfull, Elvis Costello, Brian Wilson and (reviewed next month) Robyn Hitchcock. All are worth getting hold of, and all belie the current "yoof" orthodoxy. Actually I’ll shut up now before accusations of "old git" start flying into the forum… (Hey, old people deserve a chance too…)
Well, over at Incendiary, we are all excited about two cracking festivals, Crossing Borders in The Hague and London Calling at the Paradiso. Both will pack a sonic punch I’m sure. Check below for details. It also seems the entire musical caravan is on the road this month; to give a brief, thumbnail sketch you can see Steve Earl, Franz Ferdinand, Nick Cave, Tom Waits, No Means No, The Zombies, Richard Bona, The Decembrists… It’s all getting out of hand maaan…
I’m sure everyone is aware of the TRAGIC news about John Peel. I really can’t adequately express the sadness that has enveloped everyone I know. There are two tributes to Peely this month in Incendiary. I only wish that we didn’t have to write them in the first place.
And sadly that wasn’t the only terrible news this month.as I’m sure you’ve all heard about Marc Almond. Thankfully he’s alive (at time of posting this), and of course we all wish him a speedy recovery. It makes the brilliant Soft Cell gig in 2002 seem all the more special and poignant. A brilliant singer and performer, and by all accounts a smashing bloke. Get well soon Marc.
On a lighter note, we’re planning a Christmas bash. So watch this space! Suffice to say, it’ll be a full-on Incendiary night, so it’ll be nuts. Oh, and the forums up and running this month, so we’d love you to get on down and share the bright shiny new Incendiary with us. Promise you’ll do that?
Crossing Borders
Running from 11th to 14th November, in Den Haag, and pulling together some of the most interesting and controversial names in print and on record. Literary stars Irvine Welsh, Jeanette Winterson and Ruth Rendell will be joined by dEUS, the brilliant Sophia and Rufus Wainwright. And I am just plucking a few names from the VAST array of talent on show. This is a seriously inspiring event you should go to.

London Calling
On the same weekend (incredibly BAD VIBES sent out to the ‘genius’ in marketing/sales who thought it would be good for the two events to go head to head), London Calling will continue its annual showcase of new talent from abroad (not from London. In fact I think only the brilliant Rakes are from London; the Dears certainly aren’t). Last year Franz Ferdinand and Fiery Furnaces stole the show. I reckon the Dears are gonna make a noise this time…
