The Polaroids – Urban Fox

I love this EP. Standing on its own two feet, meeting the world on its own terms and almost a classic.

A classic three track EP. Oh, lovely lovely lovely. It warms the cockles of my heart, it really does. Now, I may be pushing it a leetle, but this EP is like nothing else around in the present pop music scene. Urban Fox seemingly exists in a sonic world of its own, and in that respect it’s like early Cocteau Twins, or Bauhaus EPs.

That’s not to say we’re dealing with difficult or alienating music here. On the contrary, the three songs are almost absurdly simple, sing along pop gems if you will allow me a little hyperbole. They are also very engaging lyrically, in the sense that you are very involved with the song’s content. Or, to put it rather more simply, you can sing along in a good old fashioned manner.

As to the tracks themselves; Urban Fox is a driven, nervous, girl-boy affair that has a feel akin to VU era Velvets or a poppy Amon Duul 2. You Shape the Flow of My time builds on this intensity, but it’s much more of a slow burner. Check out the fizzing guitar surge that explodes throughout the track. Fantastic. It’s honest and heart warming music in the way the Modern Lovers’ music was or Talking Heads’, or Sparks’, (okay, okay, I’ll stop now).

Sunbeam Motor Cyklist is a wonderful treble soaked groove that never lets the listener’s mind wander, it is confident, insistent, focused and so bloody simple. I love this EP.
