If you like And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, then you should like this LP, if only because of the history of cross fertilization of musicians between the two bands. It’s a melancholy, reflective record at times, punctuated by noisy slabs of guitar and a veritable battering of drums. Venison for example, is a pretty quiet lament on the state of hunting till 5 minutes in, when all hell breaks loose.
There’s a real concentration on the interaction between the instruments, seemingly the band don’t have much time for extraneous pedals and effects; this is seen to great effect on Quiero, Quieres which is a powerhouse of combined, forceful playing. Give a listen too to the pyrotechnics on The Catch; the music at times can be seen heading towards stadium rock territory.
Personal reminiscences are dotted throughout the LP; My Mascherano is possibly the most melodic (and complicated) showcase for these reflections. In some ways this record reminds me of PJ Harvey’s Rid of Me; (check out Lonely Does It for some sort of link), another personal, visceral set of songs.
