Groningen‘s Adept are making quite a reputation over here in Holland, and this record is the proof of their burgeoning reputation. The opener Get Lo is a good indication of their sound; a spooky number driven by some thumping beats and some dissonant metallic clashing sounds. It’s remarkably effective dance music in that it doesn’t waste time by adding too much. Rather the record concentrates on the essentials.

Adept are, indeed, adept at making very atmospheric music with a sense of urgency that doesn’t really owe anything to anyone. U Can Have it Ur Way is a brilliant example of this; the moody introspection of the vocals dovetails beautifully with a very sparse sound-scape; yet always punctuated by the ever-present thump of the beat. The closest you get to any form of reference is DAF, but there is none of the playfulness that DAF possess. Adept seem to be pursuing some righteous, hidden agenda.

It is this introspection and moodiness that is the key to Adept’s sound. However strident the band gets at times, the sense of alienation and moody disaffection is never too far away; Wonder and Commune show this off perfectly. Indeed I wonder where they’d be if they tried to go all upbeat and empathic on us?

Brilliant.
