Khan – Who Never Rests

In some ways it’s brilliantly bone-headed dance music, though you are always aware that the man creating this is a sharp operator sonically.

Oh golly read the press release, it’s enough for me to give this LP a miss; still it’s such an awful write up it makes the thought of listening to the LP quite beguiling prospect. Read on… He who never rests… with heart and blood and beats and laptop, A modern day blues traveller. First of Finland, then Cologne, New York, Mexico and now Berlin. Of Turkish-Finnish extraction, a hot-blooded man from a cold place with contradiction in his soul.  Torch singer from the depths of hell, delivering a decayed electronic blues.

What makes it worse is the back cover picture, where a blonde-mopped Khan leads a pony by a harness.

Actually I should stop the clever-clever stuff here; as Who Never Rests is a very enjoyable LP. Khan trades in funky slow beat with enough squiggles and burps from various electronic gadgets to keep things ticking along in a very interesting manner. Excommunication and Golden Dawn are great menacing slabs of funk which sound incredibly sleazy. There are unmistakable nods to Prince (I Got To) interspersed with quite downbeat, often jazzy reflections such as B-Movie or Who Never Rests. At other times it is a straight forward dance record, check out the gloriously named You Like to Party? for proof. In some ways it’s brilliantly bone-headed dance music, though you are always aware that the man creating this is a sharp operator sonically.

Who knows? The soundtrack for an alternative barbecue?
