Sula Bassana and the Nasoni Pop Art Experimental Band Volume One

An LP created by a seemingly gargantuan crew culled from various bands and members of the fabbo psychedelic record label Nasoni; the title should really give it all away as to its sound. Everything I’ve heard of Sula Bassana makes me think of the Seeds, or Barrett’s Floyd… albeit a stoned out of their mind Seeds and an almost comatose Barrett…. It’s enormously derivative stuff, but great fun. The opening track Slowner lays down the law for the rest of the album with a sticky stumble through hazy landscapes. The pace is lifted slightly for a trippy work out on The Terrascrew whereas Ridin is a dreamy pop song with lashings of phasing and organ.

Things stumble around pleasantly for a few tracks, but really kick off (if that’s the right expression) with the last three; Pay for Freedom, Day Dreams and Emmerting Song, each one a gargantuan freak out. Pay For Freedom is stepping into 7Up territory (it could be Brian Barritt or Tim Leary on vocals to be honest). Day Dreams is a great, meandering, hippy-trippy lullaby and Emmerting Song is a veritable smorgasbord of musical effects and noises, at times getting in a blissed out, Sonderangebot-Neu! style. And, as it’s the last track it is all of ten minutes. Stands to reason…

A thoroughly enjoyable LP, if you like a bit of the old psychedelic…
