A really nice release, this one, and to think it nearly slipped under my radar. If you like Beatle-style pop then you’re in for a treat. Right from the opening track Look Me Up, there are punchy hooks and choruses galore. It’s pleasant, eager to please stuff for sure, but the songs work in a way that doesn’t make you wish the sentiment redolent in, say, Macca-styled work-outs as Cake Parade would burn and writhe in hell forever. Underlying the sentimental chord structures there’s enough intelligent inquiry to keep you guessing. So, nothing too mawkish and there’s always a twist, as in the abrupt guitar riffs in Need Your Needs. Or the great refrain in Need More Lights (despite other parts of it sounding depressingly like Razorlight)
Best tracks for this reviewer are Henry and Hanzy which is a delightfully underpowered stomp replete with handclaps and jingle bells, Lieutenant Kije style… and Comfortable Headphones, which has a touch of James Kirk about it.
All bar one of the songs clock in at three minutes, either on the head or a few seconds over, it may belie the fact that these tracks have been thought through to an inch of their lives, or not… who knows? I certainly found it weird. Still, if you want something uplifting and unashamedly poppy, you’d do a lot worse than listen to this.
