Great stuff this, (and it bloody well should be; what with Alexander Hacke contributing)… As if A Star kicks off (and continues right through to the end) like Alpha Centauri-era T-Dream in full flow, albeit with elements of the Theme from Shaft chucked in for good measure. Its “hot shit”, I kid you not. Hacke gets into his sinister stride with Scarlet Woman, lamenting over a sparse brooding soundtrack. Bring Back Those Happy Days sounds anything but: a confused noise, (sounding suspiciously like a kitchen attacked by a Robin Reliant) takes quite some time to reveal its swampy, scratchy muse. Suddenly things drop off, leaving the listener startled and unable to resist the percussive shuffle of Fire Next Time. It’s at this point where you begin to realise that this is a great LP.

Prince Priest sees Hacke back in action; once again it’s a sinister groove that builds up to an absolute monster courtesy of some lap-steel guitar and demented vocals. Noon of Night takes the mood down again with a beautifully chilly meditation. Parade kicks out the jams in fine style after a meditative opening, Will Sergeant-style guitars sky-scrape and head-fuck in equal measure. Things quieten down a tad by the end but you can’t stop wondering if there’ll be a final blast. It’s really enthralling stuff.

A great release. The meditation rock revolution starts here.
