Whoa! This is something else. Driving rock of high quality is what we have here. There’s definitely a feel, I know PiL have been mentioned as a comparison and I can hear that in the abrasive guitar and vocal phrases now and again. Sometimes it strayed into Goth territory, Chipping Ice and the magnificently tribal stomp of Cockles sometimes sounds like a very heavy Siouxsie… And Peel Some Off at times reminds me of a Garlands era Cocteaus covering the ‘Sabs. And Faust are somewhere in the sonic stew too, maybe it’s all that echoing feedback and white noise over a Neanderthal beat.
But let’s not get too nit-picky. It’s a rock record first and foremost. Stuff like All Night Services and Chipping Ice is direct and there to get you nodding along eventually… It’s also a record that plays around pretty shamelessly with the basic tenets of the genre, what with all the stop-start moments and atonal noise. And thank fuck for that. For this is an exciting release and takes no prisoners.
