Porn – Merzbow’s …and the devil makes three is a well thought out jungle of rhythmic noise from start to finish. The band present layers of distortion, feedback and other noise to create a continuous instrumental experiment.
On occasions, a more conventional hard rock sound can be heard, such as on track 6 (VI), which is not too dissimilar to the rawer side of British noise-rock leaders FuckButtons. However the overall sound of the record is far more brutal, and there are no signs of the ambient easy listening aspects to some noise bands. …and the devil makes three is a hard record, which blends the sounds of Faust with a (at times) raw Black Metal style. This comes out the strongest on their most impressive track 7 (VII).
But while scribes like me can nod to the references found in their work, Porn – Mezbow constantly play with the listener by gradually turning from what sounds quite conventional heavy rock into the most harsh noise and back again. The technique is applied cleverly and while the record may be very unfriendly to a lot of ears, it constantly keeps those who are willing to give it time gripped to these progressions, and for that …and the devil makes three is potentially a very rewarding record.
