The Pains of Being Pure at Heart -S/T

..this record deserves to be judged on its own merits, and trying to place it in a wider historical context only serves up ammunition for detractors of the band.

Ladyfinger(ne)- Dusk

Done well, there’s nothing finer than an out and out rock album. Done badly and contemplating major dental work begins to seem preferable to listening to the whole thing a second time.

The Veils – Sungangs

Sungangs, the third album from New Zealander via Blighty’s Finn Andrews and friends (and produced by Graham Sutton of BSP fame) could easily lose half its songs and be all the better for it.

Matthias Hellberg & the White Moose – Out of the Frying Pan Into the Woods

Even the sleeve offers no escape, as Mr H brazenly confronts us full length, nude save for a pair of garish lemon yellow boxers, multicoloured socks and a banana.

Zu – Carboniferous

Another great Southern record release… The Rome-based math rock act produce a fun, Shellac-esque rock out record, with hints of jazz and heavy metal in parts. The record flows nicely from track to track, despite the constant rhythmic breaks and weird mystical bridges (best heard in the evil-sounding Chthonian).
