A fabulous LP; snappy, powerful and, despite the conventional set up (guitar drums, bass), one that boasts something different, something that makes the listener take notice. Despite the jocular inner sleeve artwork, and the odd moment of noodling around with the odd minor chord, there’s something very alien and angry about this LP.
The songs are short and full of punch and verve: Cup My Hands is a visceral wail underpinned by some Kimberley Rew-style guitar runs. And Today and Circus of Pigs are hardly a barrel of laughs, despite being very catchy tracks. The Soft Boys sound (especially the harmonica in the mournful A Sugarpill Side Effect or that guitar run in Far from Right) is very noticeable. But never a bad thing, obviously.
The meandering tracks have a great presence about them; maybe it’s the fact that the guitar never allows things to become too academic in songs like Far From Right or the brilliantly passive-aggressive The Idiot.
Sadly, it’s all over in about half an hour. This lot could be something special.
