Nigh on indecipherable cover artwork, full of lo-fi electro that could very well be construed as ridiculously annoying, and on a tiny provincial Dutch label. What more do you want?
Spoelstra’s debut LP is a marvellous thing, if only for its utter refusal to do anything it doesn’t want. It boasts possibly the most hermetically sealed music since, oh I don’t know, Cluster’s Zuckerzeit? I have no ideas what the titles are because I can’t read them, suffice to say it starts off (and continues throughout) as a tinny fairground theme from hell. Maintained by Elves. Allow me a further metaphor. Each year on the 2nd -3rd October Leiden holds a huge outdoor festival, replete with a gargantuan fair, to celebrate the lifting of a siege during the Dutch war of independence from Spain. Now if this fair, one of Europe’s largest, had Spoelstra’s LP playing, at full volume, then no-one would go, and no-one would ever, (and I mean ever), come back
I love it, and if you like the oddball, you’ll love it too.
