Drums pound, guitars squeal and the singer yearns like a six year old throwing a tantrum. It’s all good fun.

There’s a lot to like here but you could easily ignore them as there’s so many other bands doing this kind of Cure/BunnyMen/New Order influenced thing nowadays. Well, at least they’re one of the better bands doing it, especially as they mix a bit of Depeche Mode keyboards in there too, but the same issues crop up as with all of those other Math rock bands (And Foals, I’m especially looking at you!). It’s well studied, well thought out and brilliantly executed but there aren’t any hits on here. There’s no Lips Like Sugar, no Just Like heaven and no Enjoy The Silence. They’ve got the attitude and they build up a heady atmosphere but you just want them to embrace the pop star within them and run loose with it. Having said that, it’s still a bloody good listen. That may sound like faint praise, but it’s certainly not damning. Abe Vigoda make a pretty decent racket and if they ever feel like writing a tune to go with their posturing, they could be massive. I hope they prove me right, I really do.
