There’s that element of making something that is not going to be heard by millions of people and in consequence has something very appealing about it.

It’s difficult to get past the opening track, All I Want, it’s such a scream and the best Ramones rip I’ve heard in years. I might as well get this out of the way now, and say that at times this Spits LP sounds like The Ramones, what with the fast, precision beat, the grumbling guitars, the feeling of being assaulted by the music, the deadpan delivery and simple messages. Fine, so it sounds like The Ramones, but it’s still a lot of fun to play and giving it a spin won’t wreck your life. There’s an enormously slobby element to the record too, one that deliberately wallows in a sub-life that has more in common with Bongwater or Dinosaur Jr.: it’s funny and acerbic My Mess and Tomorrows Children are great messy with gloopy vocals and the feeling that they exist on nothing but pizza. The titles are piss taking in that classic punk tradition Im Scum (sic), My Life Sucks, Fed Up, My Mess… we’ve heard it all before, (anyone remember I Hate Toes, or My Dad’s A Fucking Alcoholic?)
The Spits is a great blast and over before I can quite get my reviewing head round it. In some ways it reminds me of my mates’ bedroom punk band the Shentors who made underpowered & shit punk versions of Dinosaurs are Getting Better. There’s that element of making something that is not going to be heard by millions of people and in consequence has something very appealing about it.
I hope this lot never grow up.
