A fabulous album, dating back to 1994, and now re-released on CD with booklet and explanatory notes. It’s certainly a surprising LP given that David Tibet was a member of Psychic TV back in the day, (but then I must confess my woeful ignorance of Current 93’s oeuvre. Sorry about that).
Sonically this re-release can, (I suppose), be described as psychotic folk with a definite nod to Fairport Convention or the String Band. It’s undeniably mystic and a touch deranged. At times the shimmering, acid-tinged acoustics put me in mind of Witthuser and Westrupp, especially the magnificent All the World Makes Great Blood. And why it reminds me of Peter Hammill is anyone’s guess… Tibet declaims a set of pretty extraordinary lyrics in a breathy and at times pleading monotone that sometimes sounds remarkably like Marc Almond. It must be the intonation. Ah, speaking of the lyrics: I feel honour-bound as a reviewer to put these in some sort of context. There seems to be a marked on preponderance on the subjects of death, the passing of time and melancholy in general; this feeling is compounded when you read that a lot of observations are drawn from archaic texts and poems and dedications are given to (amongst others), “Father of Musick” William Lawes.
Bloody unusual but damned good.
