Sleek, slick, polished and ever so slightly cheesy, Wrecking Ball at the Concert hall is the kind of country pop music that normally makes me run a mile. Don’t get me wrong, I like my country pop, so long as it’s got a bit of a dark side, but this album has the kind of shiny production that tips honest songs over into the kind of sickly sweet stuff Garth Brooks made an unimaginably large and unlistenable career out of. Still, somehow, Jesse Brewster manages to hold my attention without making me want to throw up. He knows how to write a tune and, although he doesn’t add anything new to the country rock blueprint (who does?), he knows how to make it sound like a lot of fun.

If you don’t like modern country music, then by all means stay clear of this, but if you’re up for a bit of shit kicking, then you could do worse than spending some time with Jesse Brewster. As they say, he plays both kinds of music.
