Silver Magic Ships – Back to Bad Habits

Back to the Drawing Board in particular is a great soul-style rocker replete with a groovy rhythm and a savviness that the other tracks lack.

I suppose you could say this EP from Manchester’s Silver Magic Ships is a good example of everyman music or lads music; monikers which do lead to a certain amount of sneering in exalted circles, but then you will always get that when you ply your trade in the tradition of urban lad bands such as The Verve, The Music, etc.. Still, this lot have two cracking tracks in Back to The Drawing Board and Your Soul Shines Through. Both hint at something a bit more multidimensional; and there’s more than a fair amount of soul and mod inherent in their sound. Back to the Drawing Board in particular is a great soul-style rocker replete with a groovy rhythm and a savviness that the other tracks lack. The lad on vocals has something too, he gives it all in a “60’s soul singer,” Terry Reid style right the way through the EP.

So nowt new, sometimes pleasing enough, but when they are light, witty and have a spring in their step, you can see them doing something pretty moving.
